Louise Brooks—Collectable Items from Hollywood’s Famous Rebel Flapper

Louise Brooks is an icon of the Golden Age of Hollywood. She was the epitome of style and glamour, as well as sass and rebelliousness. Men loved her and women around the world wanted to be her.

Ms. Brooks was so influential that she inspired dresses, makeup, and hairstyles. Remember the famous flapper girl bob? That hairstyle was first made popular by Louise Brooks.

The 1920s were a new age. The world was recovering from World War I and Ms. Brooks was at the forefront of the new rebellious, do-what-you-want movement. She brought a sensuality to Hollywood that hadn’t been there before. While shocking to some, others ate it up, causing the actress to shoot to stardom.

Out With The Old: The Glamour Age of Hollywood, Starring Louise Brooks

The flapper culture of the 1920s was rich with booze, sexuality, and dramatic makeup. Women of this era wanted to experience new and exciting things, especially when they saw someone as beautiful, sensual, and mysterious as Ms. Brooks on screen.

Prior to the 1920s, women were expected to be quiet and focus on housework. After the Great War, however, most women wanted to put those days behind them. The skirts got short and the haircuts got even shorter. Women felt more comfortable expressing their needs and desires, and they were excited to go after what they wanted in life.

Louise Brooks wholly embraced this culture, and in doing so, shot her way to the A-list of Hollywood royalty.

A Portrait of Louise Brooks—Her Rise to Stardom

Ms. Brooks was born in Wichita, Kansas but wasn’t content to stay there. She moved to New York, became a featured dancer with the Ziegfeld Follies, and was eventually spotted by talent executives from Hollywood.

Though she was featured in twenty-four films during her career, she is best known for her role in Pandora’s Box. She portrayed an amoral and erotic woman who had a deep disdain for men and the world they ran.

While Ms. Brooks was an accomplished actress, this isn’t what garnered the most attention in her life. She was a lover of all the arts and immersed herself in philosophy. In 1951, she penned a short autobiography entitled Naked on My Goat. She wrote another autobiography in the early 1980s entitled Lulu in Hollywood, chronicling all of her younger years, her dancing days with the Ziegfeld Follies, and her perception of the Golden Age of Hollywood and the filmmaking process.
